Quick Tip – How to tether an iPhone to a computer or laptop

Working remotely? Do you require an internet connection but don't have access to a Wi-Fi hotspot or USB dongle?

Tethering allows you to use your iPhone and the data plan provided by your carrier (ie. Telstra, Vodafone etc) as a modem to go online.

Requirements

  • An iPhone – this acts as a 'modem' for your internet access.
  • iPhone's cable – to connect your phone to the machine.
  • A working USB port on your machine – the iPhone/iPod USB cable will need to connect to the machine here.
  • A desktop PC or a laptop – to access the internet.

Set up

1. Connect the cable to the USB port on the machine, and connect your iPhone to the cable.

Browsing internet pages on your laptop should now load up as per usual. Please note that this will only work if the iPhone in question has a sim-card with an active data plan. Be warned that carriers may also charge an extra fee when tethering devices, so please check with your provider before setting up the tether.
